The first tooth

When should a child first see the dentist?

When the first tooth comes through, and by the first birthday at the latest. Decay can start the moment a tooth appears, and an early visit catches it while it is small, as well as giving parents practical advice on brushing, bottles and snacks.

Babies are seen much younger when there is a reason: very occasionally a baby is born with a tooth that needs removing because of a choking or feeding risk, and Berala Dental has seen babies only days old for exactly that. Most first visits, though, are simply about getting a child comfortable in the chair.

Are baby teeth really worth looking after?

“They’re just baby teeth, they’ll fall out” is the most common reason children’s teeth are lost early. Baby teeth hold the space for the adult teeth, let children chew and speak properly, and some stay in the mouth until age 12.

The Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) helps eligible families with the cost of children’s dental care, up to $1,158 per child over two calendar years. Children are generally eligible when the family receives Family Tax Benefit Part A or certain other government payments.

Berala Dental bulk-bills every CDBS-eligible visit: Medicare pays the clinic directly and there is no out-of-pocket cost. CDBS covers check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fissure sealants and fillings. It does not cover orthodontics or cosmetic treatment.
